Phi Eta Sigma

The Emory chapter of Phi Eta Sigma recognizes Emory's outstanding first-year students through leadership, mentorship, and networking opportunities.

After careful consideration and in collaboration with academic leadership across both Emory College and Oxford College, Emory University will formally conclude its participation in the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society (PES) following the Spring 2025 induction cycle.

This decision is grounded in our values of academic exploration, student well-being, and responsible stewardship of institutional resources. The emphasis on first-semester GPA alone does not fully align with Emory’s evolving approach to recognizing student excellence. Moving forward, students will continue to be honored through a variety of academic recognitions, including the Dean’s List (Oxford College), Honors in Course (Emory College), Departmental Research Honors (Emory College), and other distinguished societies.

Those already inducted will receive recognition at commencement through 2028.

Membership into Phi Eta Sigma is by invitation only and based on academic performance during the first semester at Emory. Eligible students are notified via email early in the spring semester of their first year with further details and information.

Eligibility is determined by the following:

  • A minimum of 4.0 GPA for your first fall semester at Emory AND be in the top 20% of the first-year class based on GPA
  • A minimum of 14 letter graded credits
  • No I, U, or W grades during your first semester
